IN THE PRESS

A few months ago, a new brand of “technical performance intimates” (otherwise known as long underwear) called Matek launched. Pieces include a surprisingly flattering button-down one-piece long john called a Gentoo, a sweat-wicking turtleneck leotard and legging set, and a weirdly charming unisex fleece turtleneck bib with arm holes called a Dik-Dik.

One need only take a glimpse at the brand’s Instagram feed of vintage ski snaps to understand that the sport’s rich history is a key player in Stern’s designs. However, her ultimate driving inspiration “is how far the fabrics have come,” she explains, pointing out her four-way stretch jersey, which is equipped with sweat-wicking, odor-protecting, and quick-drying materials and made from recycled nylon.

By incorporating mesh on the calves, Matek ensures you won’t experience sock slide or bunching underneath your boots for all-day comfort. Last but not least is the easy-access butt flap, making bathroom breaks a breeze. Pair the Gentoo with the Serval bra and you’ve got yourself a killer combination for slaying the slopes.

Not Gorpcore, Just Chic. Indie skiwear brand Matek sells roughly the same product as Patagonia or Columbia: warm technical gear for experiencing the elements. But unlike the outdoor megabrands, Matek gracefully dances on the line between function and fashion.

The Cut

The key to staying warm is, of course, the art of layering. Even if you’re in the warmest ski suit on earth, a flimsy cotton layer is something that can ruin your day (if you sweat even just a little bit, the wet cotton won’t dry—it will only make you cold). Matek, a new brand designed in Los Angeles, adds a touch of high-fashion pizzazz to dressing sensibly for the slopes.
